Mary Oliver’s poem “The Journey†was published in the collection "Dream Work" in 1986 by Atlantic Monthly Press. "Dream Work" is Mary Oliver’s sixth book of poetry, following her Pulitzer Prize-winning 1984 collection, "American Primitive."
According to critic Alicia Ostriker, the collection signals the beginning of a thematic shift for the famed American poet from coping with the natural world toward coping with personal suffering. “The Journey†tells the psychological struggle of an individual who, having finally found the path to a better life, finds she must ignore both actual and metaphorical voices of doubt and learn to listen to herself.
