Currently in Brooklyn with her husband and three children, Joy Ann Reid is a correspondent for MSNBC, as of 2015. Jason Reid, Joy's husband, is a documentary film editor for the Discovery Channel. Joy is producing a documentary called "The Fight Years" that examines boxing in the 1950s and 1960s.

Having graduated from Harvard University in 1991 with an emphasis on film, Joy is a fellow for the 2003 Knight Center for Specialized Journalism. In the final portion of Barack Obama's 2008 campaign, she was a press aide, and her articles have appeared in South Florida Times, The Miami Herald, The South Florida Sun-Sentinel and Salon.com. Previously, she was a editor, freelance columnist and online news editor.
