A wide range of national statistics related to juvenile crime are available through OJJDP.gov, the website for the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention, a division of the Justice Department. However, these statistics take time to compile and are unavailable to the public for over a calendar year.

The primary sources of juvenile crime statistics are the official records of the criminal justice system and self-reporting, in which victims or offenders voluntarily describe their experiences. Although self-reporting is vulnerable to bias, due to either unwillingness to participate honestly or natural flaws in a subject’s memory, it provides information official records would miss, such as rates of unreported crime.
