The Kansas-Nebraska Act was passed on May 30, 1854, by the U.S. Congress. The act allowed the citizens of Kansas and Nebraska to decide among themselves whether to allow slavery to continue within their territory.

The Kansas-Nebraska Act was intended as a repeal to the Missouri Compromise of 1820, which legally prohibited slavery north of a latitude that affected the regions of Kansas and Nebraska. This act resulted in a surge of both pro-slavery and anti-slavery supporters moving to the area to be able to influence the decision. Violence was the result of this disagreement, and the nickname "Bleeding Kansas" was given to the area.
