Alaska was first purchased from Russia on March 30th, 1867 and annexed into the United States as a territory. However, Alaska did not become a state until January 3rd, 1959 when the Alaska Statehood Act was enacted by President Dwight D. Eisenhower.
The Alaska Statehood Act was signed by President Eisenhower on July 7th, 1958, but it was not enacted until January of 1959. The act allowed Alaska to enter the United States as the 49th state. When it was first purchased by the Russians, Alaska was considered a military district until 1884 when it became a civil and judicial district under the Organic Act.
