When is whale watching season in Alaska?

Most whale watching tours take place between April and October. The Alaska Department of Fish and Game, or ADFG, provides information on the best time to see species of whale in Alaskan waters.

Although it is possible to see whales as early as April, most whale activity in Alaskan waters happens throughout the spring and summer months. Many southeast and southcentral Alaskan communities offer boat tours to see whales during the summer.

Humpback whales are most likely to be seen in June and July, especially along the Inside Passage. The best chance to see Beluga whales is south of Anchorage, from mid-July to the end of August when salmon are abundant. Unlike Humpbacks and some other whales that migrate through Alaskan waters, Orcas can also be residents, so there is a chance to see them year-round.
