John Fitzgerald Kennedy was elected President of the United States in November 1960. Kennedy was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 1946, and he was subsequently re-elected in 1948 and 1950. He was elected to the U.S. Senate in 1952.
John F. Kennedy was 43 years old when he won the presidency. He was the youngest president elected in American history. Kennedy was the first Roman Catholic to serve as president. During his presidency, he was supportive of civil rights, and helped to launch the Peace Corps. President Kennedy was assassinated by Lee Harvey Oswald on Nov. 22, 1963, in Dallas, Texas.
