Barack Obama was first elected as the 44th President of the United States on Nov. 4, 2008. He was sworn into the office on Jan. 20, 2009.
Obama was elected as the first African-American president of the U.S after defeating Senator John McCain of Arizona. He was elected to the office for a second term after defeating Mitt Romney, the Governor of Massachusetts.
Born in Hawaii in 1961, Obama was raised by his grandparents. With the help of scholarships and student loans, he attended law school and later joined public service as a senator. He has two daughters, Malia and Sasha, with his wife, Michelle.
