What was the Khilafat movement, and what was its impact on Muslims?

The Khilafat movement was a religious campaign by Indian Muslims following the end of World War I in support of the Muslim government of the Ottoman Empire in Turkey. The movement affected Muslims by ultimately leading to the downfall of the same Muslim government that the movement supported.

The members of the Khilafat movement worked to support the caliphate, a Muslim system of rule in Turkey, while working against the British colonial rulers in India. When members of the Khilafat distributed literature about the movement in Turkey, the secular Turkish leader arrested them for foreign influence and used the incident to convince the governing body to disband the Muslim caliphate in 1924.
