What is the Kilauea lighthouse?

The Kilauea Lighthouse is a marine navigational lighthouse located on Kilauea Point on the island of Kauai, Hawaii, in the Kilauea Point National Wildlife Refuge. Dedicated in 1913, the Kilauea Lighthouse served as a pivotal navigation aid for ships heading to and from the Orient.

The tower was built in a classical revival architecture style and stands 52 feet high. As of 2014, it serves as one of Kauai's most popular tourist attractions with more than 500,000 annual visitors, according to HawaiiWeb.com. Time and the harsh tropic marine environment have taken their toll on this building, and restoration efforts are underway.
