To kill crazy ants, their colonies must be controlled and destroyed using perimeter spray treatments and liquid baits. Crazy ants are challenging to remove due to their colony structures and natural behavior. The process can take anywhere from a few days to a couple of weeks.
- Identify colonies and populated areas
Determine the locations of the ant structures by checking the sides of buildings, under rocks, trash, soil and the cavities of plants and trees. Certain crazy ant species are attracted to electrical equipment and currents, so it is also ideal to check old televisions, computers and transformers.
- Apply area treatments with liquid spray
Carefully spray the perimeter containing the colonies with insecticide. Popular brands include Talstar, Bifen, Termidor, Fuse and Demon WP. Be sure to avoid spraying plants and crops that may eventually be consumed by humans.
- Use liquid ant bait
The most effective baits against crazy ants are liquid baits, such as Gourmet Liquid Ant Bait. Apply the bait to the same spot each time to prevent the crazy ants from coming inside the house.
- Remove or change conditions to prevent nest sites
Clean areas by disposing of leftover food, grease or anything with a scent. Ants tend to colonize in areas where food is consistently available, and removing these sources helps to prevent the problem.
