What kind of bee digs in the ground?
By Forinfos - 25/02/2025 - 0 comments
Digger bees, sweat bees and mining bees all dig their nests into the ground. The nests are typically anthill-like in appearance with dirt mounded up around the opening. The opening is much larger than that of an ant hill.
All digging bees are helpful insects. They are pollinators and are rarely aggressive as a species. The females are capable of stinging but are unlikely to attack unless threatened. While these bees are considered solitary creatures with the female digging out nests and mounding soil around the opening, if the conditions are right in an area for nesting, it is common to find many of these digging bees in one area. Bumble bees are also known to use abandoned rodent warrens as nests.
