What kind of boats can be sold by an owner?

Any boat can be sold by the owner, as long as the proper paperwork and title transfer documents are filed. Rules can vary by state as to how a boat sale should be administered.

The state department of motor vehicles website lists what is required under state law to sell a boat. Other paperwork may be required if the boat being sold has a trailer. A bill of sale and title is also be needed; however, if the boat has an outstanding loan on it, the buyer may not be able to register the boat until the loan is paid off.
