The Tappan Zee Bridge is a cantilever bridge spanning New York's Hudson River at one of the widest points. Opened in 1955, the Governor Malcom Wilson Tappan Zee Bridge is 90 feet wide, 16,013 feet long and has eight solid concrete caissons supporting it.

Cantilevers function as an important part of the basic structure of a cantilever bridge. A cantilever is a horizontal beam or truss that stretches well beyond its vertical support system. The longest distance between the cantilevers of the Tappan Zee bridge spans 1,212 feet.

Seven lanes of traffic travel this toll bridge, which is the longest bridge in the state of New York. Only eastbound traffic pays the toll.
