The Tappan Zee Bridge was built in 1955 and opened to the public on December 15 of that year. It is the longest bridge in the state of New York, and its completion connected Rockland and Westchester Counties for the first time.
The proposal to connect South Nyack and Tarrytown started in the 1930s as a way to improve transportation between the two river towns and other counties. The building of the bridge paved way to the development of the rural lands in Rockland County during the baby-boom era.
In 2008, New York state government officials announced a replacement for the Tappan Zee Bridge. The project has an approximate cost of $3.9 billion.
