Gastroenterologists perform the procedure known as a video camera endoscopy, according to the American Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy. The examination is also called a capsule endoscopy.
To perform a capsule endoscopy, the doctor places electrodes on the subject's abdomen and gives the patient a pill-size camera to swallow. The procedure is painless, and the actual exam takes place during the patient's normal daily activities, explains John Hopkins Medicine. Unless there's a complication, the subject doesn't feel the capsule move through his digestive tract. Gastroenterologists use capsule endoscopy to diagnose diseases such as ulcerative colitis, celiac disease, gastrointestinal bleeding and Crohn's disease.
