The yellow-bellied water snake is a gray snake with a yellow belly. It is a member of the order Squamata, which is composed of other snakes and lizards and is also a member of the Colubridae family because it does not have venom.
The gray color on the snake also can have green, brown and black hues and is quite dark. The yellow belly is completely yellow though there may be an orange hinge on certain snakes. The snake likes to live in warm waters including sloughs, swamps and ponds. The blotched watersnake is similar to the yellow-bellied water snake with a yellow belly; however, it can have a green and brown body instead of gray.
