According to Ministry of Wood, the most common materials used today in buildings skateboards are Canadian maple veneer, Baltic birch plywood and bamboo. Other materials include solid wood for vertical laminate, and foam- and aluminum-filled carbon fiber composite boards.
The sugar maple, which is native to northern Canada, is considered the best material for skateboards and is most commonly used in high-end, premium boards. Due to the longer and more intense Canadian winters, the wood is 10 percent stronger than the maples grown in the northeastern U.S. The wood also requires minimal nontoxic processing, is moderately flexible for its strength and is reasonably priced.
