What is knot weed?

Knotweed is a type of buckwheat in the Polygonum genus. It is also an herb that treats such ailments as lung disease, skin disorders, bronchitis and gum disease. Knotweed is considered an invasive weed, but the plant is consumed by humans and certain larvae.

Knotweed has small flowers that are pink, white or green. Knotweed describes annual and perennial herbs, and others possess woody vines. Knotweed extracts may also reduce swelling and prevent plaque accumulation on the teeth. Certain species of knotweed are also consumed during famines, and it is a useful element in Chinese medicine, treating urinary tract infections. There is also a type of knotweed that is used in regular cooking in central Turkey.
