When is Labor Day?

Labor Day is always the first Monday in September. In 2014, Labor Day was on Monday, Sept. 1, and Labor Day will be on Monday, Sept. 7 in 2015.
According to the United States Department of Labor, Labor Day became a federal holiday in 1894, but was first celebrated by the state of New York on Sept. 5, 1882. The holiday was established in order to recognize the contributions of American workers that led to the prosperity and strength of the country. It is nicknamed the "working man's holiday" and is often celebrated with parties and parades. Today, it also symbolizes the last weekend of summer for many Americans.
