Where do land turtles live?

Terrestrial turtles, called tortoises, live on all continents except for Australia and Antarctica and inhabit many islands. Tortoises are found in a wide array of environments, including deserts and tropical rain forests. Most tortoises are herbivorous and have a diet consisting of leaves, fruits and flowers.

Tortoises are believed to have the longest lifespan of any animal, with some living beyond 150 years. A tortoise's age can be approximated by counting the number of rings on its carapace, although seasonal factors such as food intake can skew the results. Male tortoises have longer tails than females and are generally smaller in stature.
