Cuba is the largest island in the Caribbean Sea. At 42,426 square miles, it is a bit smaller than the state of Pennsylvania. The country is made up of the island of Cuba itself, a few archipelagos and Isla de la Juventud.
Cuba was settled by Native Americas such as the Taino and Ciboney people and was ruled by Spain for over 400 years until the Spanish American War in 1898. Control of Cuba then passed from Spain to the United States. However, Cuba was granted independence from the United States in 1902, with some restrictions. As of 2015, the United States maintains a naval base at Guantanamo Bay.
