LASIK surgery for astigmatism is a form of eye surgery that reshapes the inner portion of the cornea to correct the astigmatism. It is effective for individuals with mild to moderate levels of astigmatism.
Astigmatism is caused by an irregular shape of the cornea. This causes the eye to refract light irregularly leading to blurriness, near-sightedness or far-sightedness. LASIK surgery can be bladeless, using a laser. It can also use a corneal blade, known as a microkeratome, to perform the corneal reshaping. LASIK surgery is performed as an outpatient procedure by an ophthalmologist. In 2008, the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery conducted a study that found that 95.4 percent of LASIK surgery patients were satisfied with the procedure.
