How do you lay tile on concrete?

Lay tile on concrete by preparing the concrete, applying thinset, laying the tiles, cutting the tiles and adding grout. You need chalk lines, tile spacers, a paintbrush, tile, a notched trowel, thinset, a wet saw, grout, a grout float and waterproofing membrane material.

1. Prepare the concrete

   Sweep the concrete. Paint a coat of anti-fracture and waterproofing membrane material on to the concrete. Once it dries it creates a rubber-like coating.

2. Snap chalk lines

   Lay tiles over a 2-foot section of the cement. Measure the section, and mark the measurements against the wall. Use the measurements to snap chalk lines in a grid over the floor as reference when laying the tile.

3. Prepare the thinset

   Use cold water when preparing the thinset. Follow the instructions on the label.

4. Apply the thinset

   Apply a layer of thinset using a notched trowel to a section of the floor.

5. Lay the tile

   Using the chalk line as a guide, press a tile into the thinset. Place tile spacers on the corners. Continue this process until you have laid all the tiles.

6. Cut tiles

   Cut tiles using a wet saw to fit along the edges or any obstructions on the floor.

7. Apply the grout

   Use a grout float to apply the grout to the spaces between the tiles. Remove the tile spacers as you go. Wipe away excess grout using a damp sponge.
