Who is the leader of Sikhism?

After 1708, spiritual and administrative powers were vested in the whole community of Sikhs at large. However, the Shiromani Gurdwara Prabandhak Committee, or SGPC, oversees the Sikh holy sites. They are also mandated to effect decrees that will guide Sikhs in their daily lives.

The historic leaders of Sikhism are called "Gurus." The Guru leadership, however, ended with Guru Gobind Singh. Since then, any respectable Sikh can lead the congregation of Sikhs in prayers, scripture reading, rites and ceremonies. Since its inception, the Sikh religion has had ten Gurus.

The SGPC created a code of behavior and beliefs called the "Sikh Rahit Maryada" in 1950 that Sikhs are expected to follow.
