According to the University of Michigan, leeches are famous for surviving on blood, although some types of leeches also subsist on worms, snails, aquatic insects and other invertebrates. Some blood-sucking leeches specialize only in consuming fish or other animals while other leeches feed on any vertebrate.
The University of Michigan states that most leeches live in shallow, slow-moving freshwater like creeks, lakes and rivers; however, some leeches live in the ocean or in damp soil on land. Leeches also can grow anywhere between 5 millimeters, or less than one-fourth of an inch, and 25 centimeters long, or more than 10 inches.
