Cockroaches are omnivorous and can consume any kind of food source as long as it is organic. Typically a cockroach prefers to eat various types of meats, sugars and starches. Other materials that roaches can eat include paper, hair and decaying matter.
The diet of a roach largely depends on the environment that it lives in. Cockroaches found in sewers, for example, consume mostly sewage. Tree cockroaches, on the other hand, have a diet that is largely made up of decaying wood matter. Cockroaches adapt to their environments, and those found in human residences typically reside near kitchens and food storage areas.
