There are a few cities, such as Toronto and Moscow, that encompass the southern portion of the taiga, but the region is mostly uninhabited by humans. There are also indigenous groups who live in the taiga.
The Sami people of northern Scandinavia live in countries like Norway, Sweden and Russia, and they also live in the tundra and the taiga. They are citizens of their respective nations, but they also maintain their own cultures and traditions. People of southern Siberia and northern Mongolia raise deer in the taiga. These groups raise deer as riding animals and for their milk. These herders also hunt and fish in the taiga.
