The absolute location of Rome, Italy is at the latitude of 41 degrees and 54 minutes North and longitude of 12 degrees and 29 minutes East. The capital city is situated in the western region of the Apennine Mountains and the eastern side of the River Tiber.
Aside from its popular nickname as the "Eternal City," Rome is also known as the "city of seven hills," which include Quirinal, Viminal, Palatine, Capitoline, Esquiline, Aventine and Caelian. These hills were isolated by the swampy terrain and once formed the seven walled cities of the Ancient Roman Empire. Due to its proximity to the Tyrrhenian Sea, Rome belongs in the Mediterranean climatic area.
