The backspace key can be disabled by modifying a browser's default configuration settings. Major browsers, such as Firefox, have a built-in functionality that automatically sets the backspace key as the browser's back button when keyboard focus is not on a text field.
Mozilla provides the following steps to lock the backspace key.
- Type "about:config" into Firefox
- Read Mozilla's warning message
- Set the integer preference to 2
Ensure that there are no leading words to "about:config" in the address bar, such as "http://" or "www." Press the enter key after typing the command.
Select or deselect the checkbox that comes with the warning message. Click on "I'll be careful. I promise!" to proceed.
Locate "browser.backspace_action" from a list of options. Double-click on it to open a pop-up dialogue box. Input "2" in the textbox. Click "OK" to disable the backspace key from its default browser action.
