A college hockey game spans three 20-minute periods of regulation game time. This takes an average of two hours and 25 minutes to complete. Games tied after the final period extend into a five-minute sudden-death overtime period. If still tied after this, a shootout occurs to resolve the draw.
The 2014-15 NCAA Men's Division I season included 59 hockey teams from schools competing in six conferences: Atlantic Hockey, Big Ten, ECAC, Hockey East, NCHC and WCHA. The Division II and III levels features 81 teams in 10 conferences. The semi-final tournament and finals of the NCAA Men's Ice Hockey Championship in each division are known as the 'Frozen Four.'
