Cummins has been making diesel engines since its founding in 1919 in Columbus, Indiana by Clessie Lyle Cummins. The firm, originally named Cummins Engine Company, opened expressly for the purpose of making diesel engines, an engine style patented in 1892 by Rudolf Diesel.

Cummins initially had difficulty marketing the relatively new diesel technology until the end of 1929, when he mounted one of his engines in a vehicle, creating the first diesel-powered automobile in the United States. After impressing investors with the vehicle and setting new records for endurance and speed, Cummins began to supply diesel engines to the fledgling trucking industry, laying the groundwork for the growth of the company throughout the 20th century. As of 2015, the company has its headquarters in Columbus, Indiana. It sells engines and provides service in over 150 countries.
