How long does a first aid certificate last?

Both major providers of CPR/AED first aid training in the United States offer certification that lasts for two years from the date the course was completed. The American Heart Association and the American Red Cross cover similar course content but award certificates independently of each other.
Each of the two major certifying agencies issues certificates for CPR and first aid as well as training in the use of the automated external defibrillator. This certificate is usually a prerequisite for work as a lifeguard, foster parent or rescue worker, and it is typically required prior to enrollment in EMT or nursing courses.
