According to Flu.gov, the symptoms of seasonal flu typically last one or two weeks. Between 5 and 20 percent of U.S. residents suffer from this illness each year. The flu season lasts from autumn to spring, and the highest occurrence is usually in January and February.
Flu.gov states that the best way to prevent the flu is through vaccination. The disease is contagious and spreads through the air or through contact with surfaces where the virus is present. Children, the elderly and people suffering from chronic conditions are at greater risk of complications from flu. Common health complications include pneumonia, dehydration, ear and sinus infection and the worsening of underlying chronic conditions.
