As of 2014, an official National Football League football should be from 11 to 11 1/4 inches long. According to the Official Rules and Casebook of the National Football League, the length of the football is just one of the standard measurements and specifications that makes it an official ball.

The long circumference of an official NFL football should be 28 to 28 1/2 inches, the short circumference should be 21 to 21 1/4 inches, and the ball should weigh between 14 and 15 ounces. It should be a "Wilson" brand football that is hand selected and bears the signature of the Commissioner of the League.
