Garlic planted in the fall is typically ready to harvest in the summer, says The Old Farmer’s Almanac. Garlic is ready to harvest when the tops of the plant turn yellow and the wrapper does not disintegrate.
Garlic should be planted 6 to 8 weeks before the first hard frost of winter or in February or March for southern locations. Although it is possible to plant garlic in the spring, planting in the fall ensures larger, more flavorful bulbs during the summer harvest. Garlic must be planted in well-drained soil in an area that receives plenty of sunlight, explains The Old Farmer’s Almanac.
