To do long multiplication, set up the equation with the larger number on top. Multiple the number in the ones position on the bottom by the top number. Write the result below the equation. Do the same for the rest of the bottom numbers, and add up the result.
- Set up the equation
Set up the equation so the higher number is on top. For example, if the equation is 250 multiplied by 22, put the 250 on top. Draw a line beneath the two numbers. The solution goes below this line.
- Multiply the numbers
Start with the number on the far right of the bottom of the equation and multiply it by the top number. In the equation 250 multiplied by 22, this would be the 2 in 22. Multiply the 2 by 250. Write the result beneath the line. Beneath that answer, put a zero in the ones position. Multiple the second 2 in 22 by 250 as well, and write this answer to the left of the zero. The result should be the number 500 above the number 5,000.
- Add the results
Add the two numbers below the equation to get the answer to the problem. In the example above: 5,000 plus 500 equals 5,500. So, 250 multiplied by 22 equals 5,500.
