Overtime periods in National Basketball Association games are 5 minutes long. Overtime occurs when the two teams playing are tied at the end of regulation, which occurs at the end of the fourth period.
Not including television timeouts, there are breaks of 130 seconds between overtime periods. NBA teams play as many overtime periods as it takes until one team is leading at the end of a period. Team fouls do not carry forward into each overtime period, but player fouls continue to accumulate. The longest game in NBA history occurred on January 6, 1951, when it took the Indianapolis Olympians six overtimes to defeat the Rochester Royals 75-73.
