According to CNN, the PlayStation 3 was released in the United States on Nov. 17, 2006. The version with the 20-gigabyte hard drive retailed for $499, while the 60-gigabyte hard drive model cost $599. Sony shipped 2 million PlayStation 3 consoles at the product's launch.
Engadget reports that the PlayStation 3 was released in Japan on November 11, a week prior to its worldwide release. The console was released in the United States and in Europe on the same day. When it was launched in 2006, the PlayStation 3 had the highest price tag of any gaming console, including rival Microsoft's Xbox 360.
