How long is the recovery after coronary stenting?

If coronary angioplasty is performed using a groin sheath, patients must lie flat for about six hours following sheath removal, states WebMD. If a wrist or arm sheath is used, lying flat is unnecessary. Some patients are admitted to the hospital for overnight observation after a stent procedure.
When patients go home, they are typically advised to avoid heavy lifting and vigorous exercise for several days or as directed by their doctor, according to the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute. Patients are also instructed to avoid straining during a bowel movement, notes WebMD. Activity should gradually be increased to a normal level in the week following a coronary stent.
