How long is the recovery from a broken collarbone?

It takes several months for a broken collarbone to heal completely, according to the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons. Diabetics or tobacco users may experience a longer recovery time.
It is normal to return to regular activities three months after the injury, states the AAOS. Returning to regular activities or lifting with the arm before the clavicle is completely healed could result in further injury, requiring the patient to restart the healing process. WebMD states that the clavicle is healed when the arm and shoulder can move without experiencing pain, though it is best to wait till the doctor has taken an X-ray to confirm the collarbone is healed.
