If the stent procedure is performed using a groin sheath, patients must lie flat for about six hours after the procedure, states WebMD. If a wrist or arm sheath is used, lying flat is not required. Sometimes overnight observation is required following a stent procedure.
When patients return home after a stent procedure, they are instructed to avoid strenuous activity and heavy lifting for several days or as directed by the doctor, states the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute. Avoiding straining during bowel movements is also recommended, states WebMD. Patients may gradually increase their activity to normal levels in the week following their stent procedure.
