The average recovery time following a hernia repair procedure is around three weeks, according to WebMD. Most people go home the same day after surgery but need a few weeks to heal before resuming light activities; strenuous exercise is not advised until at least six weeks after surgery.
Driving is usually possible a couple of weeks after surgery, provided there is no groin pain present, notes WebMD. Patients undergoing hernia repair are advised to avoid sex for around three weeks, and all activities that cause pain must be avoided.
Following surgery, swelling is normal. An ice pack applied to the incision for the first 24 hours or so can reduce the incidence of swelling, according to WebMD.
