The shingles vaccine is not recommended to treat active cases of shingles, according to the CDC. The vaccine is meant to prevent the disease from developing and is recommended for those over the age of 60.

Shingles normally lasts for two to six weeks, notes Mayo Clinic. While there is no cure for the disease, a doctor prescribes antiviral drugs such as acyclovir, valacyclovir and famciclovir to shorten the duration of the rash and to reduce the risk of complications. To treat the pain that accompanies shingles, a doctor administers a corticosteroid injection or prescribes anticonvulsants, antidepressants and narcotics. He sometimes also prescribes topical numbing agents.
