How long should a tie be?

Ties hang higher or lower depending on the type of knot used to tie it. A Windsor knot uses more fabric than a four-in-hand knot, resulting in a shorter tie. An average-sized English tie is 57 inches long, but Italian ties run longer at 58 to 59 inches to accommodate more elaborate knots. Tall or large men need ties that are 61 to 63 inches long.
