How long should you wait to swim after eating?

According to folklore, a person should wait at least 30 minutes after eating before swimming. However, there is no medical evidence to support this claim, and therefore there is no set time period one should wait before swimming after consuming a meal.
According to the myth, blood is diverted from the body's extremities to the stomach in an effort to aid in digestion after eating. This would theoretically cause the muscles in the arms and legs to cramp and make it difficult for the swimmer to reach safety. However, the Red Cross and the American Academy of Pediatrics do not back this claim and do not recommend a specific waiting period before swimming.
