While senators are elected to serve terms of 6 years, members of the House of Representatives are elected to serve terms of only 2 years. There are no limits to how many terms to which members of Congress may be elected.
Members of Congress, whether senators or members of the House of Representatives, are elected to represent the people of their home states. Each of the 435 members of the House of Representatives is elected to serve 2-year terms, and each of the 100 senators is elected to serve 6-year terms. In addition to terms of individual members, Congress as a whole is in session for 2 years at a time, each term beginning on January 3 of every odd-numbered year, and numbered consecutively.
