There are many different species of toucan; the largest of them, the Toco toucan, has a 20-year lifespan in the wild. Most captive toucan species have a lifespan of around 25 years. The oldest captive Toco lived to be 26 years old.
Toucans are tropical birds of the family Ramphastidae, and on average they live shorter lives in the wild than they do in captivity. Smaller birds have shorter lifespans. The channel-billed toucan has a lifespan of around 20 years. The red-billed toucan has a life expectancy of 15 years. The very smallest of the group only live about 12 years.
