According to the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, a person may qualify for citizenship through naturalization if she has been a permanent resident of the United States for a minimum of 5 years. Applicants must also meet any other eligibility requirements.
Citizenship through naturalization is possible within a shorter period of time if a person has permanently resided in the United States for a minimum of 3 years and can file as a U.S. citizen's spouse. Individuals who have qualifying service in the U.S. armed forces can also apply for citizenship through naturalization if they meet the other eligibility requirements.
