Full recovery from hammertoe surgery takes anywhere from two weeks to three months depending on the type of surgery, states New York Bone and Joint Specialists. During this time, a patient needs to keep his leg elevated and may not be able to drive for at least three weeks.
Any stitches or pins placed in the foot during surgery are taken out by the doctor a few weeks after surgery, explains the American Orthopaedic Foot & Ankle Society. The doctor may also give the patient exercises and or stretches to do in order to improve the toe's flexibility during recovery. Postsurgical swelling is common and may not completely disappear until a year after the procedure.
